An introduction to metaverses. That last “s” is critical to understand, as there are many metaverses, not just one. Hand on for a 10 minute overview intended for people who know essentially nothing about the metaverses.

It’s not news, but it’s definitely part of a future that has arrived.

Trevor:

Hello, and welcome to the common leaders podcast. This episode is the first edition of the not news segment each day of the week. At least maybe sometimes on weekend, but Monday through Friday, each week, every day, you can bank on a tenant. Minute edition of the not new segment. Now in the future, I will have some co-hosts and other hosts that will be presenting this. And some other times that I won't even be here, but today is the first one and it's all me today's edition is going to be called not new. The metaverse. So I'm going to do something a little bit different today than other podcasts versions I have done. I'm going to share my screen and, uh, using zoom, they all wonderful and all encompassing zoom. We're going to do a little screen recording and explore what the metaverse is to very newbies like myself. I have. The littlest time researching it, but a few weeks ago, um, I will get the person's name. I don't remember her name off hand, but I attended a webinar a couple of weeks ago and I asked somebody. I attended a webinar a couple of weeks ago. And I asked one of the panelists in that webinar who was an entrepreneur and was promoting entrepreneurs. I asked her, what would you suggest if you could pull up out of a vacuum, a topic or area within the world for a new. Entrepreneur to have a great skill set in that you think is going to be really helpful to them in the small business world. In the next few years. And specifically I said like the next two to five, what over the next two to five years is a great field to get into or a great field to have knowledge. And it's not going to be for me. Um, because I am not going to be on the leading edge of any sort of tech discussion, but I wanted to know, um, partly start to be involved in this is step one in that. And she said, Uh, she said the metaverse. So we're going to peek into the metaverse a little bit today and see what we find. So step one, in this, it's going to be to screen-share, uh, electric. See my lovely face if you so choose. And if you're just listening, you can't see my lovely face. And if you're just listening, I will do my darndest to give you a wonderful description of what we're finding online. So, uh, step one is to go to Google and I'm going to type in very. Very easily, the metaverse and see what happens. We're just going to put one, so like any good Google. You can expect that it's going to be full of stuff and a lot of junk at the beginning, honestly, it's a lot of the popular news. It's a lot of the stuff that gets good search engine optimization, SEO. Um, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to help us a bunch. So when I looked at this before, most of it in the past couple of months has been related to Facebook and mark Zuckerberg because he released. This big deal that they're going to invest heavily in a metaverse, uh, in their metaverse. So just alluded to what a metaverse has a little bit, but we'll get into it. Um, a lot of the news is going to be founded with Facebook. So it's not a bad idea to start there. Um, pardon me? The first thing we come across is this picture of mark Zuckerberg on an, uh, business insider magazine or website cover. And it's mark Zuckerberg, the actual dude. So far as we know, staring at mark Zuckerberg, the fake. Uh, animated animatronic. I forgot what they call it. Uh, avatar, looking at the avatar version of himself. I am learning slowly but surely. So it's just him staring at him. Basically. He picks his outfit during the video, and it's a cool video to watch. So a great place to start would be to go to the Hanniel YouTube and just type in mark Zuckerberg on the metaverse or metaverse. Mark Zuckerberg video and the upside of starting there, if you've never heard of the metaverse before. And my opinion is that it's going to be entry-level Facebook. Anything associated with Facebook? I am finding is pretty entry-level because there's such a wide user. Yeah. That they have to kind of meet that user base wherever they might be. And they've probably invested a ton of money in trying to do that. So their video is not a bad entry point. I would start there if I were you. It's where I started. Um, and I learned enough between the video I watched their. And a couple of articles I read to start to get an understanding of what it is and what it is not Wikipedia is another great universe to start in, to understand something like the metaverse to understand something, this brand new it's definitely not where I would stop. Um, and then after you look at a couple of real basic things, And to be honest, the first search you go into is, again, going to be so dense with pop news, popular news, that you may not really get any farther because they have to have to make it again, digestible for random person and try to hook you in rather than going to a, maybe an it or a tech expert or a tech person who can explain it in a little more detail, uh, in a way that you can actually start to picture it in your mind, because I sure couldn't, even after the. Entry into it. I understood what it could look like visually, but I didn't understand the greater deal because an important thing to know about the metaverse is that it's not just Facebook. That is probably thing. Number one to know is to separate the metaverse from Facebook. They have somehow managed to trademark the term metaverse as part of their business, as a company name, like a subsidiary or part of the Facebook holdings. I don't know. Um, which is cool for them, but it's a little unfair to the rest of the metaverse marketplace because the term metaverse refers to a, and it's telling us on the screen right now through New York times a universe beyond what's in front of you, essentially, it's a fake. Digital in the world. Fake has maybe a poor term, but it's in your computer. It's in the cloud. And imagine you go in to your computer screen and it's just a white screen or a blank screen, a black screen, whatever color screen you want to jump into. And there's nothing. Right. So imagine like Willy Wonka. Uh, if you remember back to like the original one where the one little, I think it's a little boy. He gets shrunk down and he's like sitting on this fake TV with chocolate that looks the same size as him.'cause he shrank himself and he's just in this world where all he has is chocolate and your world all as you have as a blank screen. Um, and now imagine looking around and seeing essentially nothing, the metaverse is the idea that now that you're in that screen around nothing that has boundaries, nothing that has an endpoint or a start point for that. It just is a blank screen that now you could create a whole world in there and you might start with breasts under your feet. And then maybe the grass turns into a yard. And the yard turns into the front of the house. And the house is part of a town as part of a community, as part of a country, as part of a world is now part of a universe. And that is the metaverse. You start with a blade of grass under your feet, and you have an entire world. And there are many companies I'm learning out there that have created a metaverse a universe beyond the one that we walk around in and have jobs. And typically, um, that in the short is the metaverse. And I got that far with about 30 to 45 minutes of looking into it because I just didn't dedicate very much time to my initial look through. Um, I got, as far as I just told you. With essentially the searches that I've mentioned to you, the way you get a little bit deeper is like I said, going to something like, what is the metaverse and then searching for something that's from wired.com for instance, or seeing that.com. I actually think Ciena is maybe the one that I read and then I listened to a YouTube video. I like to listen, so I can do other stuff at the same time. Um, And I took away the mark Zuckerberg. Again, the Zuckerberg video is a solid start. Let's just go in here and ask what is matter. Verse don't get crossed up and crypto, um, don't get crossed up and blockchain, um, stuff too deep. It is related to blockchain, but the concept of blockchain, which is also new to me. But as soon as you get into blockchain, you're talking about NFTs, which are non fund fungible funds. Something like that. Um, I don't fully understand it and I also don't fully understand crypto. And so if you cross into an article that gets too deep into crypto or too deep into NFTs, or even into blockchain, I would bail on it and go to something that's a little more entry-level because that is likely where you're at. If you're listening to. Like I was, um, just start with the basics so you can get your head into it a little, it's a weird, weird concept because it sounds like a video game and largely the platform is going to be like a video game where it's all created around you. So instead of Mario running through the Mario world, it's going to be. With an avatar is what they call it, essentially a character. So replace Mario with a character that you create in some people's character may look like them like mark Zuckerberg and his video. It makes a character that looks like Kim Shakur he's super vanilla. That's cool though. Whatever. I would probably make an avatar that. I don't know, a 10 foot tall rhino that's purple. I'm not sure, but you can make it whatever you want because it's, it's a created thing. So whatever you want to see yourself represented as within this made up video game type of Mario world is what you can create. Uh, I don't know much beyond that, that you are going to create yourself and start walking around the metaverse that's as far as I've gotten with it, I think it's cool to check out and I would encourage you to check it out. And the reason I would encourage you to check it out beyond the fact that. Just absorbed a moment that you get to live in a time where we're talking about creating fake universes or different universes, excuse me, not fake, but different universes, because these will be real to the people who hang out in them. Um, it's as real as the phone conversation you have with a friend, it's as real as you listening to me now where I'm not physically in front of you, but I'm somewhere in your world. And so in that way, you can enter a, a, one of many metaverses with. Mario thing that looks like you and go run around in the metaverse, I'm sure you could play poker and spend some money. I'm guessing you could do all sorts of sketchy, potentially illicit things. Um, you know, even think grand theft auto back in the day. I don't know. Maybe there's some of that going on in the metaverse. I don't know yet what is in the metaverse but it does sound very cool. I. I hope for all of our sake that it is not just a Facebook thing in the future, because there are many metaverses out there to get involved in. Because again, it's multiple universes that any dude or lady or person can create. So be a part of one, I'm going to do it. And maybe we track it in the not news segment, but poke around a little with the metaverse it's the. To some extent it's not going to dominate the future and probably the next few years. However, I do think it could dominate the, um, the social media type of vibes where social media, in some ways does dominate the things we do. Um, for better, for worse, isn't the point, but it does dominate. And so in that way, I would say, learn a little bit about the metaverse early on. And if there's a way that maybe you can make a couple bucks doing it on the side or spend a couple of bucks, I don't know. Um, I think you can do all that stuff with a Metta versus some level. So check it out. It's not. But it is on its way. That is the first edition of not news. I hope you have a wonderful time. Let me know how you feel about this first edition. And if you, haven't not new segment that you'd like to hear about a topic you'd like to hear about. Let me know, because I think I have one, maybe two of my own in addition to my team. So that being said, peace out, share it, record it, um, all the great things and have a nice day.
